Published in 1995, the Sugar Busters! Diet went on to become widely popular and continues to be a bestseller even today. The authors include H. Leighton Steward, Morrison C. Bethea, Samuel S. Andrews and Luis A. Balart. In this diet, sugar is blamed for our health problems and Glycemic Index, rise in blood glucose and insulin problems are blamed for weight gain.
Sugar Busters Diet Basics
This diet program is quite arbitrary. It eliminates all refined sugars such as corn syrup, molasses, honey, sugared sodas, dextrose, glucose, maltodextrin, and beer. Even carbohydrates like refined flour, white rice, potatoes, corn, and carrots are banned from your diet.
Only stone-ground grains and high-fiber vegetables and fruits can be included in meals. Small amounts of carbs such as brown rice, oats, and sweet potatoes are allowed. In all, the diet balances at 30% protein, 40% fat, and 30% carbs.
The Sugar Busters diet is based on a simple science theory. High carb snacks or meals raise the level of glucose in the blood. This leads to greater release of insulin than can be converted to glycogen and hence, weight gain. Under this diet, you learn to keep the need for insulin low by restricting the intake of certain foods. It also reduces your body’s insulin resistance which results in lesser risk of obesity and diabetes.
